What to do in Boa Vista: a guide to water activities

Boa Vista is the easternmost island of Cape Verde, a few hours'' flight from Europe. People come for its huge beaches, golden sand and water at 24 °C all year round. Here is how to make the most of the island, from the sea.

1. Watch humpback whales

From February to May, humpback whales travel past Boa Vista to give birth. It is one of the most impressive natural events in the Atlantic. Trips leave from Praia do Estoril and last about 2 hours.

2. Go snorkeling

The seabed around Boa Vista is a natural aquarium: tropical fish, starfish and sometimes turtles. Mask, snorkel and life jacket are provided, and an instructor stays with the group.

3. Reach the beaches by taxi boat

Some of the island''s finest coves can only be reached by sea. The taxi boat drops you on the Sal Rei islet or on a remote beach, then picks you up at the agreed time.

4. Go deep sea fishing

Tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi: Cape Verde waters are famous for big game fishing. Trips start early in the morning, when the sea is calmest.

Practical tips

• Bring water-resistant sunscreen and a UV shirt.
• Pack a windbreaker: it is always windier at sea than on land.
• Book ahead in high season (December to May).
• Trips can be rescheduled if the sea is rough: it is a safety decision taken on the morning itself.

How many days do you need?

Three or four days are enough to combine snorkeling, a taxi boat trip and a whale or fishing outing, while keeping time for the beaches and the village of Sal Rei.
