Tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi: what to know before heading out to fish off Boa Vista.
The deep waters of Cape Verde are famous across the Atlantic for big game fishing. Off Boa Vista, drop-offs and currents concentrate predators only a few miles from the coast.
Species you may encounter
- tuna (yellowfin and skipjack), present most of the year;
- wahoo, fast and combative, mostly from October to May;
- mahi-mahi, often around floating objects;
- barracuda and various bottom species.
Techniques used
Trolling is the main method: lines are towed behind the boat at a steady speed. Depending on the area and the weather, jigging or bottom fishing may complete the trip.
Do you need experience?
No. The skipper prepares the gear, sets the lines and guides you during the fight. Beginners are welcome, and experienced anglers can bring their own lures.
How to prepare
- Early morning departure, when the sea is calmest.
- Cap, polarised sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.
- If you are prone to seasickness, take a tablet an hour before.
- Bring water and a windbreaker.
What about the catch?
The fish can be shared with the crew, and some restaurants in Sal Rei will cook it for you. Fishing is practised in line with local size limits and quotas.
