How many days do you need to visit Boa Vista? Compare 3, 5, 7 and 10 days and choose the ideal duration for your holiday in Cape Verde.
How many days do you need to visit Boa Vista? 3, 5, 7 or 10 days
Are you planning your holiday in Cape Verde and wondering how many days to spend in Boa Vista?
The island may look small on a map, but it concentrates very different experiences: Sal Rei, 55 kilometres of beaches, the Viana desert, Santa Mónica, villages, Djeu, natural reserves, and many maritime activities. (visit-caboverde.com)
The right length of stay therefore depends less on the size of the island than on your travel style.
3 days allow you to see the essentials. 5 days already offer a well-balanced stay. In our opinion, 7 days is the ideal duration for a first visit. And 10 days or more really allow you to adopt the pace of Boa Vista.
3 days in Boa Vista: possible, but you have to make choices
Three days can be enough if Boa Vista is a short stop on your trip.
However, you will have to give up the idea of seeing everything.
I would divide the stay around three main experiences:
Day 1: Sal Rei and the ocean. Discover the capital, Praia do Estoril, and optionally Djeu.
Day 2: the south. Santa Mónica, Varandinha, and optionally Povoação Velha.
Day 3: the north or a boat activity. Viana desert and Cabo Santa Maria, or snorkeling, fishing, or another boat trip.
Sal Rei, Santa Mónica, and the Viana desert are all part of the main sights highlighted by the Cape Verde Tourism Institute. (visit-caboverde.com)
With only three days, avoid scheduling two big excursions per day.
You would see more places, but you would enjoy the island less.
5 days in Boa Vista: a great compromise
With 5 days in Boa Vista, the trip starts to become much more comfortable.
You can imagine:
Day 1: Sal Rei and Estoril Day 2: excursion in the south Day 3: maritime activity Day 4: Viana desert and the north Day 5: beach, Djeu, or free day
This duration already allows you to combine land and sea, which I consider essential to understanding Boa Vista.
The island has about 55 kilometres of beaches, but its touristic appeal is not limited to the coastline: villages, desert, maritime history, and islets are also part of its identity.
Five days are particularly suited to travellers who like doing one activity per day while keeping some time to relax.
7 days: the duration I recommend for a first visit
For a first trip, one week in Boa Vista is probably the best balance.
Seven days allow you to see the main sights without turning your holiday into a non-stop race.
For example, you can dedicate:
one day to Sal Rei one day to the south one day to the north one day to a boat excursion a half-day or full day to Djeu one beach day one deliberately flexible day.
This last free day is particularly useful.
A boat excursion can be rescheduled depending on the weather or ocean conditions. Marina Travel Tours notes, for instance, that weather conditions can affect fishing trips and that whale watching remains subject to weather.
With seven days, a postponement will not disrupt your entire trip.
7 days also allow you to slow down
This is a point often forgotten when planning a trip from home.
On the internet, we tend to build a list:
Santa Mónica. Varandinha. Viana. Cabo Santa Maria. Snorkeling. Whales. Djeu. Sal Rei.
But once you arrive, you will probably also want to spend two more hours on a beach or enjoy a quiet lunch.
Boa Vista is perfectly suited to this slower pace.
The Tourism Institute describes Sal Rei as a peaceful capital whose life remains strongly connected to the port, fishing, and local traditions.
It would be a pity to visit the island without ever taking the time to simply be there.
10 days in Boa Vista: to truly enjoy the island
With 10 days, you no longer have to choose between exploration and relaxation.
You can space out the major excursions and keep several days with no set schedule.
This is particularly interesting if you want to combine:
snorkeling fishing Djeu seasonal whale watching north excursion south excursion villages beaches restaurants and Sal Rei.
You can also afford to revisit a place that you particularly enjoyed.
Are 10 days too long?
Not if you like holidays combining beach, nature, and peace.
On the other hand, if your goal is strictly to "visit the main sights", a week is probably enough.
The difference lies mostly in how you travel.
7 days = discover Boa Vista.
10 days = discover Boa Vista and start living at its rhythm.
How many days for whale watching?
The length of stay obviously does not guarantee sightings.
Marina Travel Tours currently offers its whale excursion from February to May, at €65 per adult, with two daily departures when the activity is available. Sightings remain natural and depend on conditions.
If whales are your priority, avoid scheduling your tour on the last day.
One week gives more flexibility for rescheduling in case of unfavourable weather.
How many days if you mainly enjoy snorkeling?
A week easily allows you to integrate a snorkeling trip into a land-based stay.
Marina Travel Tours currently offers a two-hour excursion starting at €40 per adult.
So you don't need to dedicate an entire day to the activity.
You can then enjoy Sal Rei or Praia do Estoril.
